Test of finite-size scaling in first order phase transitions
2014 First order transitions are rounded in finite cells or in infinite strips of finite width (cylinders). In this work we have considered the rounding of the jump of the magnetization of an Ising system at a fixed temperature T below Tc when the external field h goes from a small positive, to a small negative value. This rounding is well-known in a finite cell (block geometry) but the situati...
متن کاملNumerical Study of Finite Size Scaling for First Order Phase Transitions
I present results of simulations of the q=10 and q=20 2-d Potts models in the transition region. The asymptotic finite size behavior sets in only for extremely large lattices. We learn from this simulation that finite size scaling cannot be used to decide that a transition is first order.

In a recent paper we developed a method which allows to rigorously control the finitesize behavior in long cylinders near first-order phase transitions at low temperature. Here we apply this method to asymmetric transitions with two competing phases, and to the q-state Potts model as a typical model of a temperature driven transition, where q low temperature phases compete with one high tempera...
متن کاملFinite size scaling and first-order phase transition in a modified XY model.
Monte Carlo simulation has been performed in a two-dimensional modified XY -model first proposed by Domany [Phys. Rev. Lett. 52, 1535 (1984)] The cluster algorithm of Wolff has been used and multiple histogram reweighting is performed. The first-order scaling behavior of the quantities such as specific heat and free-energy barrier are found to be obeyed accurately. While the lowest-order correl...
متن کاملQuantum first order phase transitions
The scaling theory of critical phenomena has been successfully extended for classical first order transitions even though the correlation length does not diverge in these transitions. In this paper we apply the scaling ideas to quantum first order transitions. The usefulness of this approach is illustrated treating the problems of a superconductor coupled to a gauge field and of a biquadratic H...
